exhibition title: Here shows recent works in new installations, by the way.

date: 11/22, 2008 - 3/29, 2009

view: installation at The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma, Takasaki, Japan

*more detail of titles are below.

note:

This is the small retrospective exhibition about my failure works since 2001 to 2008. Of course we, artist, are not perfect, not super-man, we fail often. Somehow this museum could keep my failure works in their storage for some time. I always want to remake or rethink about the installation for those works. Eventually I had a opportunity to do such a show in the museum collection section. So I reconstruct, re-take a video, remake a sculpture and re-install those works. Also I had a artist talk about B-side of my works. I spoke some story behind the work I never say before and how I fail it at that time and relationship between the failure and the success.

title: Then, a whole bunch of basins crash down to the floor of the Museum of Modern Art, Gunma, Japan

year: 2007-2008

material: DVD, color, sound, basin, wood, rooftop(2400x5400x1800mm)

time: 35 seconds

size: variable according to installation

note: On the occasion of the thematic show focus on "laughter" in Mori Art Museum, I did a project about Japanese comedy from 80's. After one comedian group called Drifters invented the typical end for their show in TV program, it influenced to younger generations afterwards. And I think it is one of the phenomena for Japanese comedy scene. What they did is like this, when a comedian said funny things at the end, there was a basin fell down on his head(And then he could show his funny face too). So I took that image without anybody but a lot of basins into the end of the exhibition in the Museum.

And this version of the project was remade for Gunma.

title: “Broken” Amuro and Amuros (*new version of the installation)

year: 2005/2008

material: Mixed media

size: 3400x6300x2700 mm

note: As Japanese, I wondered how I approached to Animation field. Occasionally I had a chance to participate the show about "GUNDAM" which one of the most popular animation series in Japan. The main character called Amuro is 14 years old who operate the robot and is forced to go to the war. I built the room where he spent during the war in the space ship. And put a monitor which showed 14 years old Japanese boy's faces that same age as Amuro one after another. In the video, They seems really serious because they looked at themselves through a mirror, half-way mirror that covered the camera.

As for "Broken" version, I had another chance to show this piece in other context, other museum. So I de-constructed the room as a imitation of the animation. But keep showing the faces as a simple documentary of 14 years old Japanese boys.

year: 2006-2007

material: wood, paper

size: 2000x3000 mm

note: this is very personal photograph.

the planet of the sun is unique, of course. but in this image, the sun spread out so many spots in water on the street cleaning period in paris. every single tiny shiny spot is the sun. it shows us there is so many possibilities of the alternative way the world exist.

when i encountered this reality of life, at the same time i just broke up with my girlfriend. through this fact the sun is not only one, the world is not only one, i thought probably some other "me" might live in other possible world with her. i cheered up myself like that.

title: Ordinary things, Extraordinary things and then, maybe, Something else

year: 2007

material: wood, paper

size: 2000x3000 mm

note: There is a label on a wall in a museum show as usual. I enlarged the label of the work title itself as audience might think it was the title of my installation.

And then later I replaced it in the other context, the other show.
