Introduction
I’m going to be writing about Zainichi Koreans, or the Korean permanent residents of Japan who trace their roots to Korea under Japanese colonial rule. But others might find it off-putting that I, a member of the Japanese majority (and a man at that), am taking it upon myself to write about one of Japan’s ethnic minorities. That’s understandable. So I intend to circumvent that to an extent here by taking a series of detours. I will ensure there is a degree of abstraction in my writing and refrain from overstepping into particular, concrete issues.
(…) This short essay considers the unshareable pain of the other. And that will in turn lead to thinking about community, about how to listen to the voices of others, and about disasters and precarious lives.(…)
